Bryan Mbeumo: Manchester United Eyes Forward with Ambitious Wage Request
Targeting a significant wage boost, Manchester United is reportedly in pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo, who is seeking to increase his salary to £250,000 per week if he parts ways with Brentford this summer.
The talented forward has expressed a strong interest in joining Old Trafford, with indications that Manchester United intends to reach out to Brentford regarding a potential transfer. The west London club is believed to be requesting a transfer fee starting at £60 million for the 25-year-old.
After scoring 20 goals in the Premier League last season, Mbeumo has attracted attention from multiple clubs but is said to prefer a switch to United. Following a disappointing 15th place finish in the Premier League, Manchester United is also looking to offload two high-earning players, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, both of whom earn around £300,000 weekly. This could create space on the wage bill; nonetheless, should Mbeumo secure the salary he desires, he would still rank among the highest earners at the club.
With a strong record in the Premier League, Mbeumo has accumulated a total of 29 goals and 14 assists over the last two seasons.
Sources indicate that Manchester United is mindful of Mbeumo’s ambition to join the team. Although there has yet to be formal communication between the clubs, talks are expected to commence soon. Brentford appears ready to allow Mbeumo to leave, as he has one year remaining on his current contract, which is valued at approximately £50,000 weekly, although the club does hold an option to extend it for another year.
Versatile in his positioning, Mbeumo can operate effectively on the right flank or as a central forward. Newcastle United has also expressed interest in him, but they consider him too expensive.
Brentford’s head coach, Thomas Frank, emphasized that the club will not let Mbeumo go at a bargain price. “It is clear that if he is to be sold, it must be for a nice, nice amount,” Frank stated. “It is a lot. Mucho. Really a lot. How many wingers score 20 goals for a mid-table club? And with seven assists plus his work ethic and character, he brings a lot to the table, making him a valuable player.”
Since joining Brentford from French second-tier club Troyes in 2019, Mbeumo has scored nine league goals in both the 2022-23 and 2023-24 Premier League seasons. His total of 20 goals this season positions him as one of the top scorers, tied for fourth place with Chris Wood, trailing only Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak, and Erling Haaland.
Manchester United is keen to reinforce its squad promptly before pre-season begins. The club recently secured Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £62.5 million, although they missed out on Liam Delap, the Ipswich Town striker who is en route to Chelsea.
Additionally, United may consider selling Alejandro Garnacho and potentially Bruno Fernandes in this transfer window.
